Protecting Our Workers from Silica Exposure
Recent media coverage has highlighted concerns about silica in the stone industry, particularly with countertops. Reports often focus on the risks to workers, stating that while homeowners are safe, workers may face severe health risks from silica dust, including cancer and lung diseases.
Silica is a natural mineral used in many industrial processes, including countertop production. It exists in both natural and engineered stones. Engineered stone is made by combining resins and quartz.
Respirable Crystalline Silica
Respirable crystalline silica consists of tiny, invisible dust particles that, when inhaled, penetrate deep into the lungs and cause scarring, known as silicosis. Over time, this can lead to severe lung damage.
Silicosis
Silicosis is a progressive lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust. It leads to irreversible lung scarring and can increase the risk of lung cancer with long-term exposure. Silicosis is treatable but not curable..
How We Protect Our Workers
OSHA mandates that workers receive medical evaluations and respirator fit testing. Countertop Source monitors air quality, uses dust collection equipment, and provides proper training.
Unfortunately, not all companies follow OSHA guidelines often due to lack of awareness or resources. Simply providing dust masks is insufficient—education and proper training are crucial.
Countertop Source follows proper safety protocols by using water during cutting and grinding, and employing essential filtering respirators. All new employees undergo safety training and medical evaluations. We have received numerous Safety Awards from the Southern Utah Home Builders Association (SUHBA). We use state-of-the-art water and dust collection equipment in our fabrication shop and encourage minimal on-site cutting.
For safety, we advise customers to avoid being in the same areas as our installation crews during cutting or grinding to avoid possible exposure to silica dust. We strive to minimize on-site cutting and grinding by using a digital template machine for accurate measurements for in-shop fabrication and controlled environment cutting.
We are proud of the safety record of our fabrication and installation crews and we protect them with the industry’s best information, technology and training.
